Look beyond a halal label
Assessing Sharia compliance begins with what the arrangement actually does. Identify whether money is donated, lent, invested in ownership or used to acquire an asset, then inspect the corresponding documents. Ask how interest is avoided, how profit is earned, which business activities receive funding and who bears a genuine commercial loss. A fee renamed as a service charge deserves examination of its purpose and calculation. For zakat, the beneficiary assessment and permitted allocation of funds are also essential; a general charitable appeal does not by itself establish zakat eligibility.
Check the scope of independent oversight
Request the name and qualifications of the reviewing scholars or board, the date and scope of their opinion, and evidence that the actual contract matches the version reviewed. Ongoing monitoring matters when assets, beneficiaries or terms change. AAOIFI publishes standards covering contracts and Sharia governance, including crowdfunding governance, which provide useful reference points without certifying an individual Indian offer. Separately check the provider's legal identity and applicable registration. Religious review, statutory authorisation and commercial soundness answer different questions, so an approval in one area should not be treated as proof of the other two.
